Kangwon Land Inc is latest S.Korea casino operator eyeing power of AI as business booster

The operator of Kangwon Land, a South Korean resort housing the country’s only casino open to locals, aims to embed artificial intelligence (AI) into its operations to aid growth.

The matter was discussed on Monday during a Kangwon Land Inc board meeting (pictured).

Kangwon Land Inc is the latest casino operator in South Korea to announce plans to invest in AI. In September, Grand Korea Leisure Co Ltd (GKL), which runs foreigner-only casinos in South Korea, said it was establishing an “AI innovation team”, with the goal of integrating AI into casino operations and customer services.

Kangwon Land Inc said in Monday press release that its own board discussed and approved a proposal for a “strategic initiative” making use of generative AI services. It aimed at “accelerating digital transformation” and enabling an “efficient management environment” at the firm, in line with the national government’s policy to promote the use of AI in that country.

Kangwon Land Inc plans to apply AI in areas including customer service automation, data-driven decision-making, and internal operational efficiency, it said.

The company reported a 62.2 percent year-on-year decline in its second-quarter net profit to KRW60.63 billion (currently equivalent to US$42.2 million), as the rise in operational costs outpaced casino sales growth, the firm said in July.

Kangwon Land Inc is developing a new building – including a second casino – at Kangwon Land, scheduled to open in early 2028.
