The Singapore Oceanarium – an expansion and rebranding of the former S.E.A. Aquarium at the Resorts World Sentosa casino complex – opened to the public on Thursday (July 24), according to a press release issued by the venue’s promoter.
Resorts World Sentosa, operated and promoted by Genting Singapore Ltd, forms one half of the city-state’s casino duopoly.
An official opening ceremony for the Singapore Oceanarium was held on Wednesday. During his opening address, Lim Kok Thay (pictured), executive chairman and acting chief executive of Genting Singapore, stated: “What we’ve created goes far beyond a marine destination – not just in scale, but in ambition and impact.”
Also attending the ceremony was Grace Fu, Singapore’s Minister for Sustainability and the Environment and Minister-in-Charge of Trade Relations. She said the Singapore Oceanarium would contribute “to Singapore’s position as a leading tourism destination”.
Minister Fu added: “As a key milestone of Resorts World Sentosa’s expansion, the Oceanarium will strengthen our appeal to both local and international visitors with refreshed and immersive experiences.”
She further stated: “We welcome such developments that enhance the quality of Singapore’s tourism landscape while contributing meaningfully to environmental outcomes.”
Singapore Oceanarium is said to be three times larger than its predecessor, according to information previously disclosed by Genting Singapore.
The launch of the Singapore Oceanarium is part of Resorts World Sentosa’s SGD 6.8 billion (US$5.31 billion currently) expansion roadmap, also known as “RWS 2.0”.
Genting Singapore has said it will introduce further new attractions at Resorts World Sentosa in the second half of this year as part of the expansion.
On February 14, the group opened a new themed zone, “Illumination’s Minion Land”, at the Universal Studios Singapore theme park – one of Resorts World Sentosa’s key non-gaming attractions.
A revamped retail area, dubbed “WEAVE”, began operations earlier this month, according to the company.
Genting Singapore is scheduled to open The Laurus, a 183-room hotel under The Luxury Collection Hotels & Resorts brand, in October.
