Shishi Daily, a newspaper based in Fujian province, mainland China, is reporting that RMB400 million (US$64 million) of alleged gambling money was seized by the Public Security Police in a raid on a hotel in the province.
The action was the result of information from the public that an illegal casino operation was taking place at night in a “downtown hotel” in Shishi, a county-level coastal city of 300,000 inhabitants in the municipal region of Quanzhou, in southern Fujian province, reports the newspaper.
A total of 13 people were detained during a raid on the premises, and the case is under further investigation, reported the newspaper.
Shishi is approximately 42 kilometres (26 miles) north of Kinmen, a Taiwanese archipelago that has been identified by Taiwan’s government as a possible site for one or more casino resorts and likely to serve mostly mainland customers.
In December the Taipei Times reported Kinmen County Government Deputy Commissioner Wu You-qin saying Kinmen residents had neither supported nor rejected casino resorts. He added that many of them were waiting for the government to pass relevant legislation first.
