The Okada Manila casino resort in the Philippine capital says it has replaced single-use plastic bottles at the complex with a more sustainable alternative: “high-quality, filtered water bottled directly within the property”.
“This initiative was made possible through a partnership with Nordaq, a Swedish company known for its state-of-the-art water filtration technology,” stated the casino resort in a December press release.
By using the Nordaq system, Okada Manila said it could prepare 1,000 bottles of water per hour, all served in reusable glass bottles.
“This sustainable approach not only enhances the quality of water provided to guests, but also eliminates the use of approximately 2 million single-use plastic bottles annually,” noted the brand.
Okada Manila is run by Tiger Resort, Leisure and Entertainment Inc, a unit of Japanese conglomerate Universal Entertainment Corp.
The announcement quoted Byron Yip, Okada Manil’s president and chief operating officer, as saying: “We are elevating our waste management protocols through the Okada Green Heart programme.
“This bold move proves that we can prioritise the planet while still delivering a premium experience to our guests.”
He added: “Through our own water filtration and bottling system, we are significantly reducing the demand for single-use plastics.”
Rob Scott, vice president of hotel operations at Okada Manila, said in prepared remarks: “By embracing this change, we’re not just reducing waste – we’re setting a new standard for what responsible hospitality should look like.”
Okada Manila said it plans to extend the use of Nordaq water across other areas of its operation, “fully integrating this environment-friendly initiative into all guest experiences”.
