Tourist arrivals to Macau during the New Year period – defined as January 1 to January 3 inclusive – rose 2.6 percent year-on-year, according to data from the city’s Public Security Police released on Monday.

The tourist arrival tally for the period was slightly below 472,000, showed information taken from the seven immigration checkpoints serving the territory.

Tourist arrivals to Macau during the Christmas period increased by 9.9 percent year-on-year.

In the first 11 months of 2015, visitor arrivals to the city totalled 28.08 million, down by 3.1 percent year-on-year. Visitor arrival data for full-year 2015 is to be announced later this month by Macau’s Statistics and Census Service. Tourists are considered the main clients for Macau’s casino industry.

Data from the city’s gaming regulator, the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau, show that casino gross gaming revenue for full-year 2015 stood at MOP230.84 billion (US$28.9 billion), down by 34.3 percent compared to 2014.
