Fire reported at Cambodian border casino in Poipet

An extensive fire reportedly broke out at a casino complex in the Cambodian town of Poipet, a border resort destination with venues that serve many players from neighbouring Thailand, where casino gambling is illegal.

The Nation news outlet said the blaze alert came late on Monday at a property called “Genting Crown Casino”. Six people were reportedly injured by the blaze due to smoke inhalation, Chinese news agency Xinhua reported, identifying the affected property as “Golden Casino”.

The fire was reportedly caused by an electrical fault in an elevator.

In December 2017 GGRAsia reported – based on a filing to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange by Amax International Holdings Ltd – that a former junket operator at Macau’s currently-shuttered Greek Mythology Casino was to run a VIP room in a venue called Genting Crown Casino in Poipet.

GGRAsia noted at the time it was understood the property had no connection either to Australia’s Crown Resorts Ltd or to Malaysian gaming operator Genting Bhd and its units.
